Harnessing the Power of Your Own Blood’s PRP for Better Skin and Overall Wellness
Made mainstream by one of the more notable women in the Kardashian family, PRP sprung on the map quickly after Kim K took a selfie in the midst of receiving a “vampire facial.”
If you saw said selfie, you know that it was a little jarring (since the face she was sporting was precisely what you’d expect with a moniker like “vampire facial”), but the reality is, there’s nothing to fear about utilizing the power of PRP to revitalize your skin’s appearance for a fresher, more vibrant look.
Here’s how it works and why PRP injections might become your new favorite treatment at Potomac Medical Aesthetics.

What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, which exists within our blood, and when used for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes, works to stimulate your body’s production of new collagen to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results with minimal recovery.
How do PRP injections work to improve my skin?
PRP injections work by extracting platelet rich plasma from your blood and injecting it into the dermal layer of your skin.
These concentrated platelets are rich in naturally occurring proteins that release growth factors to stimulate regeneration of cells and repair of tissue to gradually restore a healthy and youthful appearance of the skin.
PRP has long been used in wound healing, dentistry, and the treatment of sports injuries (many elite athletes have made the use of PRP well known) and is one of the most advanced, effective natural treatments for using the body’s own growth factors to generate new healthy cells and tissue.
In fact, Dr. Petropoulos has been performing PRP procedures since 2013 after completing training with Dr. Charles Runels, a PRP treatment pioneer and inventor of the Vampire Facelift, Vampire Facial, Vampire Breastlift, Vampire Winglift, Vampire Hair Regrowth, O shot and P shot procedures.
Since then, he has followed and implemented advances in PRP treatments and has been trained directly by Dr. Runels in advancements and changes in PRP techniques.
Today, Dr. Petropoulos is one of Maryland’s leading PRP professionals and he often utilizes the power of PRP in conjunction with lasers and microneedling for acne scars and age management.
What aesthetic issues can PRP help with?
PRP therapy has become one of the most popular treatment methods to address a variety of aesthetic issues, including:
- Skin laxity (looseness) and wrinkling
- Frown lines, crow’s feet
- Eyelid wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Scarring
- Rosacea
- And even hair loss
However, in addition to those aesthetic concerns, PRP has also been proven to aid and improve issues concerning erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, sexual wellness, and injury rehabilitation.
We address all of these concerns at Potomac Medical Aesthetics by offering the Vampire Facial, Vampire Face Lift, Vampire Hair Regrowth, Vampire Breast Lift, Vampire Winglift, P-Shot, and O-Shot.
One of the major benefits of using PRP for skin and wellness rejuvenation is that because PRP is extracted from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction, rejection, or skin sensitivity that can sometimes be involved with other synthetic injectables or filler treatments.
Additionally, PRP also allows us to provide excellent treatment and results for our patients with darker skin types who cannot have laser or IPL therapies for common skin conditions.
What’s the process of receiving a PRP treatment?
A PRP treatment begins by drawing your blood (don’t worry, we use a local anesthetic when drawing the blood to keep you completely comfortable).
Then, your blood is spun in a centrifuge that separates plasma and platelets from the rest of the blood.
The plasma, now highly concentrated with rich platelets, is then injected back into areas of your body where its effect can be best harnessed to address your specific skin and health concerns.
Now the growth factors in the injected PRP work to stimulate stem cells to help create new, youthful tissue in areas like the face and scalp, and in sex organs, muscles or joints.
Overall, PRP treatments typically take 30 minutes to perform and require little to no recovery time.
How often can I get PRP treatments done?
Initially, we recommend our patients undergo a series of three PRP treatments at one-month intervals to achieve optimal results, and most patients will begin to notice improvements in their skin about three to four weeks after their initial treatment session.
To maintain long-lasting results and a youthful appearance for years to come, PRP injections can be performed routinely every six months.
